Throughout CEO, I experienced significant growth as a leader, communicator, and negotiator. One of the most important skills the CEO taught me was the importance in managing time more effectively and building discipline through maintaining a routine. At the beginning of the program, I felt that I lacked confidence in reaching out to businesses, assuming I would be ignored or rejected. However, I improved my communication skills to be able to professionally and successfully negotiate deals, even with busy business owners or those who did not know of the CEO program. This skill will benefit me for my future endeavors in university and future opportunities.
As Chief Financial Officer, I played a key role in guiding our financial strategy for our class business. I created projections, managed spending, and negotiated sponsorships and catering deals. Through my leadership position, I learned how to incorporate the whole team to collaborate effectively in order to achieve our tasks.
One of the most memorable challenges I remember facing came during the class business. Our business was a talent show and we were providing catering for our event. I was responsible for negotiating with restaurants and I worked to ensure we had sufficient catering. There were places that denied our event, but I eventually secured enough food for our event. The situation helped me become more resourceful and confident in making decisions under pressure.
CEO reshaped my understanding of entrepreneurship as I now recognize how difficult it is to run a successful business, especially by yourself. It requires constant attention across a multitude of areas with each requiring consistency and adaptability. Looking ahead, I’m more open to starting my own business someday and I plan to continue refining the skills I’ve learned in CEO. I’m especially grateful for my classmates and team members who contributed to our success. For future students, my advice is that you shouldn’t be afraid to reach out. Persistence is critical, and every opportunity starts with taking that first step. You may be rejected by a few, but those who listen will make your team succeed.
